2010/11 Open Tryout Information

About the UVic Hockey Club
It is the mission of the Hockey Club to provide students at the University of Victoria (UVic) the opportunity to play high quality intercollegiate hockey while pursuing a post secondary education.

The Hockey club is recognized as a competitive Sport Club under Vikes Athletics and Recreation. Sport Clubs are designed to be ‘lead by students, for students’ fostering the student experience and student leadership.  The Hockey club competes in the BC intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL), which is governed by BC Hockey.

In the upcoming season the UVic Hockey Club will be looking to strengthen all positions.  Tryouts are open and do not require an invitation.


Try out dates and times:
Wednesday, September 8th:      8:40 pm – 10:00 pm (Group 1) 10:10 pm – 11:30 pm (Group 2)

Sunday, September 12th:      5:30 pm -7:00 pm (Group 1) 7:10 pm -8:40 pm (Group 2)

Wednesday, September 15th:     8:40 pm – 10:00 pm (Group 1) 10:10 pm – 11:30 pm (Group 2)

Friday, September 17th:       2:00 pm – 3:20 pm (Group 1) 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm (Group 2)

Selection
Selections will be made by the Coaching staff in collaboration with the student club executive leaders. Students trying out will be split into two groups to allow for sufficient room on the ice. Initial selections will be made by the coaching staff on Friday, September 17th. Final decisions will be made by September 25th.

The try out fee is $60.00 and will be collected by a club representative in the arena prior to the first ice time.  The try out fee can be paid by cash or cheque.  Cheques should be made out to the “University of Victoria Men’s Hockey Club”.

Student Eligibility
Players competing in the BCIHL must be registered as full time students  during the academic school year. Co-op terms will be accepted.

Selection Criteria
Students trying out for the hockey club will be evaluated on the following components:

1. On-ice skills and performance - Each member must demonstrate the ability to compete at the leagues pace of play as determined by the hockey club coaching staff and student club executives.
2. On-ice tactics - Each member must demonstrate a good knowledge of the tactical elements of hockey and systems of play.
3. Fitness and athletic ability - Each member must demonstrate a high level of fitness and athletic ability.
4. Commitment to the team - Each member must be able to commit to the team for practices and games unless there is a valid reason for absence. Further, there are expectations to support the team through the sport club structure and the student lead clubs model.
5. Coach's discretion - Coaches' discretion to fill positional roles and the chemistry with the team.


Team Fees
All Selected club members are required to pay a membership fee of $500.00 at the beginning of the season. This fee goes into the clubs budget and helps pay for league fees, insurance, travel, and accomodations. Players may be required to cover additional costs throughout the season.


Team Schedule
Hockey club members are expected to attend all weekly practices throughout the season on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings at 7:40am and some Friday evenings at 10:20pm. Their will be approximately 6 travel weekends throughout the year.
