UVIC Scores Big Win Over SFULate power play goal from Matt Schultz Vaults UVIC to a 3-0 start
For Immediate Release
October 16, 2010Burnaby, BC – In the Saturday edition of the UVIC Hockey Club’s first road trip of the season the team visited Bill Copeland Arena to face the SFU Clan. UVic gave Ryan Gray the start while SFU countered with Justin Mulholland.
The first period began as many would have suspected with UVIC clamping down defensively on the skilled SFU Clan. UVIC had just four shots to the Clan’s six after sixteen minutes of play. SFU goaltender Justin Mulholland was called for high sticking and while on the power play Brent Sutherland jumped on the rebound after a Brett Campbell shot, slotting it glove side past a sprawling Mulholland. Adam Courtnall was credited with the second assist. SFU tallied a late goal to level the score. After one period, the score was locked at 1-1.
In the second frame, UVIC wasted no time regaining the lead. Off of a broken face off to the left of the SFU goal, Tommy Adair snapped a quick shot on goal, beating the SFU goaltender low just 42 seconds into the period. Matt Bell and Brent Sutherland notched the assists. SFU scored shorthanded at the 10:15 mark to level the score once again. The teams skated into the second intermission tied 2-2.
The third stanza was more of the same from the two clubs with UVIC goaltender, Ryan Gray, standing tall. Defensively, UVIC held the Clan’s attack to the outside throughout the period. At the 18:42 mark of the final frame, Justin Ferreira dug the puck out of the corner for Francis Gonella who found Captain Matt Schultz alone on the point. Schultz fired a wrist shot through traffic, beating Mulholland low blocker side. After SFU called a time out and pulled their goaltender, UVIC survived a goal mouth scramble with seconds remaining in the game to pull out the victory. Final score, UVIC 3 SFU 2.
Matt Bell lengthened his point streak to three games while Brent Sutherland notched a goal and an assist. The UVIC victory snapped the Clan’s 24 game unbeaten streak at home.
UVic went 1/8=12.5% on the power play, while SFU was 0/2=0.0%. SFU outshot UVIC 30-19.
The University of Victoria Hockey Club will look to continue their solid play against the now-familiar University of Fraser Valley Cascades in the clubs’ third meeting of the season. The back half of the UVIC road trip is set for 5:00PM at the Abbotsford Events Centre.
