Abbotsford, BC – The University of Victoria Hockey Club headed into the Abbotsford Event and Sports Centre Sunday evening for the back half of their first road trip of the 2010-11 BCIHL season to face a familiar foe, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. Getting the nod in net for UVIC was Simon Barer while UFV looked to answer with Adam Postmus.
In the teams’ first two meetings last weekend it was UVIC coming away with both victories. With UFV looking for revenge UVIC wasted little time in reasserting their dominance. At the 3:07 mark of the first period scoring leader Matt Bell opened the scoring when he slammed home the rebound after the point shot from Mark Prest. It was Prest hitting the score sheet again on the power play at 10:53 when he crept up the half wall and spotted Brent Sutherland who wired a one –timer high glove side on Postmus. UVIC had their power play working on this night and at 15:25 of the first Matthew Oliphant stepped off the boards with the man advantage and fired a laser of a wrist shot under the crossbar past the blocker of the UFV goaltender. UVIC skated into the break with a 3-0 lead.
In the second stanza, it took just under three minutes for Francis Gonella to fly down the wing past the UFV defenders before cutting to the net and shelving the puck in the top corner. It seemed to be Gonella’s period as he would be the only player to find the back of the net in the frame. At the 19:59 mark Gonella spun and fired a shot on net from behind the goal line that ricocheted off Postmus and into the back of the net. With the buzzer-beater UVIC were up 5-0 after two periods of play.
UFV seemed to come out inspired in the final frame but after a squandered UFV power play UVIC continued to roll. After taking a boarding minor, Mark Prest came out of the penalty box, regrouped in his own end and flew down the right wing finding an open Matthew Maycock who had split the defense. Maycock’s goal at 5:12 marked his first in a UVIC sweater. There was no let up from UVIC on this night as the club controlled the play for the remainder of the game. At the 15:31 mark, Steven Little notched his first goal of the season when he deflected Brent Sutherland’s point shot past Postmus. One more goal would be added to UVIC’s side of the board when Adam Coutnall stepped off the wall on the power play with little over a minute remaining and fired a snap shot high blocker side past the helpless UFV goaltender. Final score, UVIC 8 UFV 0.
Rookie Mark Prest had a goal and two assists in the contest while Francis Gonella notched a pair of goals. Another rookie in goaltender Simon Barer was solid posting his first shutout in the BCIHL in just his first start of the season.
UVic went 3/5=60.0% on the power play, while UFV was 0/3=0.0%.
The University of Victoria Hockey Club’s next action will be on the road again when they face the league-leading Okanagan College Crusaders October 29th in Kelowna. With a solid start, the UVIC team will be tested with the Crusaders’ revamped line up which now boasts former KIJHL star Brady Mason.
