UVIC Prepares for League-leading OC Coyotes This Weekend

UVIC (4-0-0) to face impressive Okanagan College (6-1-0) in Kelowna

For Immediate Release
October 28, 2010

Victoria,BC – The BCIHL regular season began according to plan for the UVIC Hockey Club who, by virtue of three wins over UFV, have vaulted to a 4-0 start. The Club’s perfect record will be pushed to the limit this weekend as the boys in blue travel to Kelowna Memorial Arena to face the 6-1 Okanagan College Coyotes.

After an impressive first season in the BCIHL for the Coyotes in 2009/10, the organization has bolstered their line up with new talent and it has paid off thus far. Brock Munro, a hometown Kelowna product, has shot out of the gate as OC’s scoring leader through seven games. As a rookie, Munro has posted 5 goals, 4 assists for 9 points.

The Coyotes’ made waves around the league this summer when they acquired WHL alum Brady Mason. Mason logged 142 games in the WHL split between the Kamloops Blazers and Everett Silvertips, posting 33 points before making the move to the Westside Warriors of the BCHL. With the Warriors, Mason posted 25 points in 46 games played. Despite trailing Munro in the points race with 5 points, Mason will pose a threat for the UVIC defencemen. Okanagan College’s top five scorers are in their first season in the league.

For UVIC, Matt Bell and Brent Sutherland sit first and second, respectively, in BCIHL scoring. Much the same as OC, UVIC’s rookies have delivered in the early season. Mark Prest has posted 7 points in just four games played while 17 year-old Dennis Pavlina trails Prest by one point.

The University of Victoria Hockey Club has been preparing diligently for this matchup since toppling UFV two weeks ago. Game times in Kelowna are set for Friday and Saturday at 8:45PM. Both games will be held at the Kelowna Memorial Arena.

The UVIC Hockey Club, a Vikes Sport Clubs program, is a student-led organization that competes competitively in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League. Information on the team is available through at www.uvicmenshockeyclub.com while league details can be found at www.bcihl.ca.
