UVIC Suffers First Loss of the SeasonUVIC falls to OC Coyotes 4-0
For Immediate Release
October 29, 2010Kelowna, BC – In a Friday night contest at the Kelowna Memorial Arena, the University of Victoria Hockey Club suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the league-leading Okanagan College Coyotes. UVIC gave Ryan Gray the start in net while the Coyotes answered with BCIHL Player of the Week Adam Butler. With the loss, UVIC now has a record of 4-1-0 and sits third in the BCIHL standings.
In what was a frustrating game for the visiting UVIC side, the first period began with a choppy, gritty pace. Both clubs attempted to set the physical tone early and it was UVIC’s Steven Little ending up on the wrong end of an elbowing call at the 5:40 mark. Okanagan College capitalized on the power play when Brock Munro was the recipient of a beautiful tic-tac-toe play 50 seconds into the man advantage. OC struck again at 11:48 as Coyotes’ Captain Sasha Golin crept through the slot and fired a shot through traffic, beating UVIC goaltender Ryan Gray high blocker side. After the first period, UVIC 0 OC 2.
UVIC regrouped after the first intermission and dominated play for the first half of the second frame. Failing to take advantage of the shift in momentum, UVIC was handed two consecutive roughing minors. While on their second power play of the period, the Coyotes benefited from a point shot that redirected off of Sam Siddall’s attempted shot block to beat Gray. Despite being outshot 10-5 in the second, OC skated into the break with a 3-0 advantage.
On a night when the bounces refused to go UVIC’s way, the Coyotes survived another UVIC surge early in the third stanza that saw multiple shots beat Adam Butler but not the post. Again, OC was rewarded at 7:12 when a broken rush produced a loose puck in the slot before Craig Materi shovelled a shot wide that deflected off another UVIC player and past Ryan Gray. OC’s Adam Butler made a couple key saves late in the game to preserve the shutout. Final score, UVIC 0 OC 4.
UVIC went 0/2=0.0% on the power play while SFU was 2/4=50.0%. UVIC outshot OC 22-17.
UVIC will look to get back on track Saturday night in Kelowna in the back half of the team’s second road trip of the season. The OC Coyotes and the Kelowna Memorial Arena will play host again. Game time is scheduled for 8:45 PM.
