UVIC Set to Face SFU Clan This Weekend
UVIC Set to Face SFU Clan This WeekendUVIC (5-1-0) to face long-time rival SFU (7-3-0) at JDF Recreation Centre
For Immediate Release
November 13, 2010Victoria,BC – After knocking off the SFU Clan in the two teams’ first meeting of the season, the University of Victoria Hockey Club will look to catch the Clan in the BCIHL standings this weekend. Saturday and Sunday’s games will also mark only the second time UVIC will play home games in the Greater Victoria area.
Since defeating the league-leading OC Coyotes two weeks ago, UVIC has been preparing diligently and looking forward to this weekend’s contests. It wasn’t all hard work and sweat, however, as the UVIC Hockey Club has been out and about in the community promoting the games which are scheduled for 7:30 PM Saturday at Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre and 12:00 Noon Sunday at Naden Arena. After a guest spot Wednesday with JACK fm’s Morning Show, the Club has been bagging groceries at Thrifty’s in Colwood while also taking time out Friday to visit the students of Ruth King Elementary School.
SFU had been off to a rocky start at the beginning of the 2010 BCIHL Season but the perennial powerhouse has since recovered to post a 7-3-0 record. The Clan’s offensive attack is led by Jaime Laprise who has posted an impressive 20 points (8G – 12A) to lead the league. Colby Kulhanek is three points behind Laprise (8G – 9A) and while Kulhanek may be a BCIHL rookie, the WHL grad seems to have found his groove with SFU. The question for SFU this weekend will be who to start in net. Justin Mulholland has seen the majority of starts this season but rookie Evan Kurylo has posted a 3-0-0 record with a 1.00 GAA and a 96.51 save percentage.
For UVIC, Assistant Captains Matt Bell and Brent Sutherland lead the way with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The speedy UVIC side will be dressing the same line up that gave the OC Coyotes fits two weeks ago in Kelowna. After UVIC defeated SFU in October with a hard-fought 3-2 win, SFU Coach Mark Coletta commented that SFU “just didn’t come out ready to play.” UVIC will be looking to looking to prove that their win was no mistake this weekend.
Saturday’s game will be played at 7:30 PM on the ice of Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre. Sunday will see the clubs head out to CFB Esquimalt to play a Noon game at Naden Arena. For each game, children 12 and under and any minor hockey player sporting their jersey will get in free.
The UVIC Hockey Club, a Vikes Sport Clubs program, is a student-led organization that competes competitively in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League. Information on the team is available through at www.uvicmenshockeyclub.com while league details can be found at www.bcihl.ca.
