UVIC Falls to SFU
UVIC loses first home game of the season 4-2

Victoria, BC – In a Saturday night contest at Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, the University of Victoria Hockey Club hosted the Simon Fraser University Clan in the first of a two-game home stand. In net, UVIC gave Ryan Gray the nod while SFU countered with Justin Mulholland.

UVIC came out strong in the first period and tallied a quick goal when Brett Campbell broke through the defense and shelved a backhander off the crossbar and in just one minute into the game. The UVIC lead didn't last long as SFU answered 18 seconds later. Each team exchanged powerplays and with SFU failing to capitalize on a five minute major dealt to Tommy Adair the score would remain 1-1 into the break.

If the SFU side had bus legs in the first they seemed to be gone in the second. After scoring less than a minute into the frame SFU would add two more by the 8:44 mark. Phil Barter would close the gap to 4-2 with a blast from the point that beat Mulholland at 4:18. However, UVIC squandered six powerplay opportunities in the second and skated into the break down 4-2.

The parade to the penalty box continued in the third stanza. After Doug Evans was given five minutes and a game misconduct for crosschecking, UVIC would be shorthanded for more than half of the period. Neither team could gain an edge in the final period and SFU skated easily to the 4-2 win.

UVIC went 0/12=0.0% on the power play while SFU was 0/10=0.0%. UVIC was outshot by SFU 40-25.

UVIC will look to get back on track Sunday afternoon when they head out to CFB Esquimalt and Naden Arena for the back half of their home stand. Game time is set for 12:00 Noon.
