Victoria, BC – Sunday afternoon saw the University of Victoria Hockey Club host the Simon Fraser University Clan at Wurtele Arena on CFB Esquimalt. In net, UVIC gave the start to Simon Barer while SFU answered with Justin Mulholland once again.
UVIC started strong for the second night in a row and jumped out to an early lead. At the 4:10 mark of the first period, Matt Bell broke in deked out SFU goaltender Justin Mulholland before burying the puck in the roof of the net. UVIC blew two power play chances, one of which a 5-on-3 advantage, before Mark Prest extended the UVIC lead to 2-0 off a goal mouth scramble at 14:37 of the first. Mitch Labreche would score for SFU late, cutting UVIC's lead to 2-1 at the break.
The power play troubles continued for UVIC in the second frame as the team failed to capitalize on numerous chances. SFU, however, had no such problem with the man advantage. Texas native Ben Van Lare would tally two power play goals for SFU early in the second. The latter half of the period became a defensive struggle and SFU skated into the intermission with the 3-2 lead.
UVIC battled hard to begin the third period and were rewarded as Mark Prest broke in down the right wing before feeding Brent Sutherland who slotted the puck past a sprawling Mulholland at 10:50 to tie the game. The deadlock would last just six minutes as Jamie Laprise beat UVIC goaltender Simon Barer to regain the lead for SFU. After a timeout was called by UVIC late in the game, the Club pulled Simon Barer for the extra attacker and Matt Bell deflected a Matt Oliphant point shot to beat Mulholland with just 33 seconds remaining in the game.
UVIC's Matt Bell had another productive game as the forward figured in all four UVIC goals, recording two goals and two assists. On the other hand, UVIC's power play was woeful once again. On the weekend, UVIC was 0-22 with the man advantage and so far this season the team is 1-37 against opponents other than the University of the Fraser Valley.
UVIC went 0/10=0.0% on the power play while SFU was 2/8=25.0%. UVIC outshot SFU 32-30.
UVIC will take a week off before hosting the Okanagan College Coyotes for a two-game set November 26th and 27th at the Ian Stewart Complex Arena.
