In the second frame, UVIC killed an early penalty handed to Tyson Viehweger that was punctuated by Tommy Adair springing Viehweger as he exited the penalty box. Viehweger made a forehand-backhand move before netting the puck through the legs of Tony Johnston at 3:22 as the OC goalie stretched attempting to make the save. The game was a very physical affair and UVIC's Doug Evans would square off with Kelly Loudoun, getting the better of the OC forward and firing up the over 200 fans packed into the Ian Stewart Arena. After OC answered on the power play to make it a 4-1 game it was UVIC's turn to go back to work with the man advantage. Mark Prest took a Phil Barter feed and beat Johnston short side at the 15:28 mark. That would be it for Tony Johnston's night in the OC goal as the Coyotes' starter, Adam Butler, was called in to stop the bleeding. The switch seemed to spark the Coyotes' as Aaron Buat would score a shorthanded goal while UVIC failed to capitalize on a five minute penalty dealt to OC. The score into the second intermission, UVIC 5 OC 2.
OC came out in the third stanza with a renewed sense of urgency and looked to cut into the UVIC lead. The play was back-and-forth until an OC penalty led to Brett Campbell taking an Adam Courtnall feed and burying the puck past Adam Butler. After OC scored to an even strength goal, Campbell would go on to scrap with Kolby Barnstable who had leveled Francis Gonella with a clean hit. The remainder of the game was chippy but UVIC managed to control the play and run out the clock to take the 6-3 victory.
Both Mark Prest and Tyson Viehweger netted a pair of goals for UVIC. Okanagan College's undisciplined play proved to be the difference on this night as the Coyotes' were handed 81 minutes in penalties. The OC side had the chance to leapfrog SFU Saturday for first place in the BCIHL standings but were unable to do so. With the win, UVIC moves to 6-3-1 on the season and remains in fourth place in the BCIHL.
UVIC went 4/12=33.3% on the power play while OC was 1/3=33.3%. UVIC outshot OC by a margin of 52-34.
UVIC will visit the Trinity Western University Spartans next weekend for the first time this season. TWU currently sits fifth in the BCIHL, six points behind UVIC.
