UVIC hosts Selkirk College: Series Preview

UVIC (9-4-1) looks to close the gap on SFU this weekend versus Selkirk (1-17-0)

For Immediate Release

February 2, 2011

Victoria, BC - Heading into this weekend’s home stand, the UVIC Hockey Club has a six point lead over Trinity Western University in the BCIHL standings with a game-in-hand. While it may be tempting for UVIC to take a peek in their rear view mirror, the Club will be focused on the visiting Selkirk College Saints this weekend.

With a record of 1-17-0, the Saints are at the bottom of the BCIHL standings. But don’t let their record fool you, this is a much-improved Selkirk team from last season. Selkirk has been on the losing end of seven contests this season decided by three or less goals. Notable amongst those losses are narrow, one-goal defeats to league-leaders Thompson Rivers University and Okanagan College.

Scott Traverse leads the Saints in scoring with 10 points (2G-8A) while November 14th BCIHL Player of the Week, Travis Herlein is a close second with 9 points (7G-2A). Joining Traverse and Herlein on the Saints’ first line is Scott Jago, a player that is no stranger to Victoria. Back in the 2005-06 season, Jago had a short stint with the Victoria Salsa as a 16 year-old before logging 43 games as a member of the 2006-07 Victoria Grizzlies. Traverse, Herlein and Jago will present the biggest offensive threat for UVIC.

UVIC is coming off a road trip to Castlegar, the home of the Saints, two weeks ago where they earned a hard-fought four points. Matthew Bell still leads all UVIC scorers with 24 points (9G-15A), good enough for a fourth place tie in BCIHL scoring. UVIC rookies Dennis Pavlina and Mark Prest have contributed nicely to offensive production with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Puck drops are scheduled for 9:30 PM on Friday, February 4th and 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 5th. Both games will be held at UVIC’s Ian Stewart Complex Arena.
