Victoria, BC – In a Friday night contest, UVIC hosted the Selkirk College Saints in the Club’s first home game of the New Year. In net, UVIC gave the nod to Simon Barer while the Saints countered with Spenser Wong.
Matt Bell wasted no time hitting the score sheet Friday night. Just 57 seconds in, Brent Sutherland worked the puck Matt Shultz on the point. Shultz spotted an open Bell at the bottom of the faceoff circle, who walked cross-crease and slid the puck under a sprawling Spenser Wong. Selkirk attempted to keep the pace under control by icing the puck numerous times; slowing down the speedy UVIC side. At the 6:54 mark, the thus far disappointing UVIC power play caught a break. Brett Campbell threw a puck on net the deflected off Adam Courtnall, off Tommy Adair and ended up in the back of the net. Scrambled play ensued for the balance of the first stanza. After one, UVIC 2 Selkirk 0.
Selkirk played a gritty, defensive game to start the second period. However, after two successful penalty kills Selkirk’s solid play was undone by Matt Bell at the 16:59 mark. On the power play, Bell was the benefactor of a swift breakout, receiving a Brent Sutherland pass just outside the offensive zone. After splitting the Saints’ defencemen, Bell snapped a shot past Wong blocker side. The power play goal turned out to be the only marker of the period as UVIC skated into the second intermission with a 3-0 advantage.
In the third frame, Selkirk continued their determined play and were rewarded with a crucial goal, cutting the UVIC lead to two goals with twelve minutes to play. The “worst lead in hockey” would not phase the blue and yellow on this night, as UVIC turned up the pressure for the remainder of the game. In transition, rookie Dennis Pavlina broke into the offensive zone before dropping the puck for Brett Campbell who beat the Selkirk goaltender with a wrist shot, blocker side at the 11:58 mark. Just thirty seconds later, UVIC found themselves on the fore-check once again. Corey St.Laurent picked the puck up in the corner before finding Sam Siddall open in the slot. Siddall fed an open Matt Shultz on the point, who blasted a slap shot behind Spenser Wong, again, on the blocker side. With little over two minutes remaining in the game, Matt Oliphant capped off the scoring in the game with a power play marker. Final score, UVIC 6 Selkirk 1.
With two goals and an assist, Matt Bell is now tied for top spot in BCIHL scoring with 27 points. The victory improved UVIC’s regular season record to 10-4-1, good enough for fourth place in the BCIHL.
UVIC went 3/6=50.0% on the power play while Selkirk was 0/8=0.0%.
The back half of UVIC’s home stand is a Saturday matinee affair with the Selkirk Saints. The game will be played at Ian Stewart Complex Arena with puck drop set for 11:00 AM.
