UVIC Suffers Third Straight Loss

UVIC falls to Trinity Western 4-2

For Immediate Release

February 18, 2011

Victoria, BC – In a Friday night contest at the Ian Stewart Complex Arena, the University of Victoria Hockey Club suffered their third straight loss at the hands of the Trinity Western University Spartans. UVIC was looking to rebound from two road losses to the league-leading TRU Wolfpack. UVIC gave Tim Manuel the start in net while the Spartans answered with JP Chapman. With the loss, UVIC now has a record of 11-7-1 and sits fourth in the BCIHL standings.

Coming off two big wins over SFU and Okanagan College, the TWU Spartans have been quickly gaining a reputation as a hard-working, physical team. It was UVIC, however, outworking the Spartans early in the game. The first period was marred with scrums and big hits, leading to an early stalemate despite the UVIC pressure. At the 17:03 mark, Steven Little took matters into his own hands. Little broke in down the right wing before toe-dragging through a defender and chipping the puck over a sprawling JP Chapman. Mark Callaghan and Brett Campbell were credited with the assists. TWU fought back but was unable to turn the momentum. After the first period, UVIC 1 TWU 0.

After Tyson Viehweger was singled out for an interference penalty, TWU capitalized on the power play at the 5:49 mark. TWU continued their hard-nosed play and heavily outshot UVIC for the balance of the second period but Tim Manuel stood tall in the UVIC net. After two periods of play, UVIC 1 TWU 1.

UVIC came out flying in the final frame. Just 1:30 into the third, Brent Sutherland spotted Matt Bell in the slot, who buried a wrist shot past the glove of the TWU goaltender. UVIC’s play would be undone by an inability to capitalize on power play opportunities and defensive miscues. Just four minutes in, TWU potted the equalizer after a turnover deep in the UVIC end. The dagger would come at the 16:00 minute mark of the final period off of another defensive turnover by UVIC. The Spartans would add an empty netter to make the final score UVIC 2 TWU 4.

UVIC went 0/5=0.0% on the power play while TWU was 1/5=20.0%. Shots were tied 28-28.

UVIC will look to get back on track Saturday night at ISC Arena in the back half of the team’s home stand. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
