For Immediate Release
March 3, 2011
Victoria,BC – Friday and Saturday will mark the end of the 2010/11 BCIHL regular season for the University of Victoria Hockey Club. What is certain is that UVic will take part in the 2011 BCIHL Championship Tournament, beginning on March 23rd in Burnaby. What seed the Club will enter the tournament and this year’s BCIHL Regular Season title, however, will largely rely on the result of this weekend’s home stand against the TRU Wolfpack.
Friday’s game is scheduled for 8:30PM at Ian Stewart Complex Arena. Saturday’s contest will see the UVic Hockey Club participate in the Victoria Salmon Kings “Hockey Night in Canada” theme. The Club will host TRU at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre with puck drop set for 2:00PM. Tickets for Saturday’s game are just $5 at the door. Salmon Kings season ticket holders can get a ticket ‘by donation’ while minor hockey players wearing their jerseys get in free! Fans can also purchase a ticket to the Salmon Kings game versus the Bakersfield Condors at 7:05PM for just $10 when they show their UVic ticket stub! In their second season as a member of the BCIHL, the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack of Kamloops has already improved upon the 16-8 record the team posted in 2009/10. Much of the Pack’s success this season can be attributed to solid coaching from the likes of Lorne Cumming and former NHLer Steve Gainey, son of the revered Bob Gainey. TRU General Manager, Chris Hans, has also bolstered the team’s line up some key additions this season.
TRU rookies Darcy Huisman, Zac Rasmussen, Tyler Halliday and Lucas Daoust have chipped in a combined 99 points this season through 22 games played. Huisman, a former WHL player with the Kamloops Blazers, currently leads all BCIHL defencemen in scoring with 26 points (6G-20A). Halliday brought with him 136 games of WHL experience while Rasmussen and Daoust were plucked from the BCHL. While these rookies’ immediate impact is impressive, the Pack’s league-leading offence has paved the way for second year player Jassi Sangha’s 35 points (13G-22A) so far this season.
For UVIC, Matt Bell and still leads all BCIHL scorers with an impressive 40 points (19G-21A) in 21 games played. Bell’s linemate, Brent Sutherland, has also posted good numbers this season. The fourth year player is having his best season with UVic, posting 33 points (10G-23A) to this point. As a rookie, Dennis Pavlina has found his spot in the league with UVic. The 18 year old Osoyoos, BC native currently sits third in rookie scoring with 27 points (10G-17A) this year.
The University of Victoria Hockey Club has been practicing feverishly this week after the team’s embarrassing 6-0 loss at the hands of the SFU Clan last Saturday. Following a players-only meeting Wednesday night, the boys in blue will need to convert power play chances this weekend, an area that has plagued the team this season. At the same time, the penalty killing unit will have to be sharp against a TRU power play that has a conversion rate of 25.19% through 22 games.
The UVIC Hockey Club, a Vikes Sport Clubs program, is a student-led organization that competes competitively in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League. Information on the team is available through www.uvicmenshockeyclub.com while league details can be found at www.bcihl.ca.
