2010/11 Season Review

Five seasons in and the UVic Hockey Club is still improving

For Immediate Release
June 20, 2011

Victoria,BC – In the fifth season of the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League, the University of Victoria Hockey Club sought their third provincial crown. The incredible highs and dismal lows culminated in an emotional third place finish at the BCIHL Championship tournament last March. After a crushing loss at the hands of arch rivals Simon Fraser University that ended their season, the UVic Hockey Club has much to be proud of looking back.

After rattling off a 5-1 start in October to start the season, the team battled to a 7-4-1 first semester record capped by a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the SFU Clan on the road. The loss was SFU’s first home loss in nearly three years. The second semester saw UVic play .500 hockey to end the regular season at 13-10-1, good enough for fourth place in the BCIHL heading in to the championship tournament.

The regular season also saw UVic host the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. The game, a narrow 3-2 loss, was played at the “Barn on Blanshard” in front of nearly 500 fans as a part of a double-header with the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings.

During the BCIHL Championships, the 2011 BCIHL Awards were handed out. The gala was highlighted by guest speakers, and former Vancouver Canucks, Geoff Courtnall and Darcy Rota. UVic forward Matt Bell captured BCIHL MVP honours and was also selected as a member of the First All-Star team. Bell posted an impressive 19 goals and 42 points in just 22 games played to top all scorers.

While Bell did the lion’s share of the scoring last season, veteran forward Brent Sutherland finished fourth in league scoring with 35 points in 23 games played. Looking ahead to next season, UVic brass has to be encouraged by the young talent that will be returning. Winger Denis Pavlina of Osoyoos, BC was one of only two rookies to crack the top-ten in league scoring with 11 goals and 30 points in 23 games played. Rookie forward Mark Prest also turned heads in the BCIHL with his 19 points in 22 games. Prest also finished in a tie for the playoff scoring lead with 7 points.

As is the nature of collegiate sports, UVic will be missing some key players next season due to graduation. Captain Matt Schultz and former BCIHL MVP Brett Campbell are two of the five veterans the team will lose next year. The team would like to wish all of their graduating players the best of luck in their future endeavours. However, a strong nucleus of players will be back next season to go along with a summer-long recruiting push being made by GM Harry Schamhart. While it was a disappointing end to the season for the blue-and-yellow, there is no doubt that the future is bright as the 2011-12 BCIHL season approaches.

The UVIC Hockey Club, a Vikes Sport Clubs program, is a student-led organization that competes competitively in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League. Information on the team is available through www.uvicmenshockeyclub.com while league details can be found at www.bcihl.ca.
