UVic Drops Season Opener to Saints

UVic carries the play but suffers 4-2 loss at the hands of revamped Selkirk

Castlegar, BC - The University of Victoria Hockey Club began their 2011/12 BC Intercollegiate Hockey League campaign Friday night in Castlegar against Selkirk College. UVic gave the nod to rookie and former BCHLer Taylor Pears while the Saints countered with BCIHL veteran Spenser Wong.

UVic got a rocky start to the season in Castlegar Friday night as key sophomore Mark Prest was ejected from the game less than 10 minutes in for a check from behind. Shortly thereafter, Selkirk jumped out to a one goal lead. However, two new additions for UVic registered their first points in the BCIHL with under four minutes remaining in the first to level the score for UVic. Rookie Adam Klein potted his first at 16:01 with helpers going to Tommy Adair and new recruit and former AJHLer Cam McWilliam. After the first, UVic 1 Selkirk 1.

The only scoring in the second frame would come by way of a shorthanded Selkirk marker. Despite a high sticking call against the Saints, Andrew Green would score for the Castlegar clan. After two periods of play, UVic 1 Selkirk 2.

Selkirk would never relinquish the lead on this night despite being heavily outplayed by a struggling UVic side. Jordan Wood would score two goals to complete a hat-trick and give Selkirk a 4-1 advantage by the 6:51 of the third stanza. Cam McWilliam would get one back on the power play for UVic but it wasn't enough for the boys in blue as they registered their first loss of the season. Final score, UVic 2 Selkirk 4.

UVic went 1/10=10.0% on the power play, while Selkirk went 0/8=0.0%. UVic outshot the Saints by a margin of 38-34.

UVic will look to avenge the loss Saturday night in Castlegar against the Saints. Game time is set for 7:30p.m. at the Castlegar Recreation Centre.
