Castlegar, BC - The University of Victoria Hockey Club looked to rebound from a disappointing season opener Saturday night in Castlegar. Both teams chose to give the nod in net to their respective starting goaltenders; Taylor Pears for UVic and Spenser Wong for Selkirk College.

The first period saw UVic fail to capitalize on early power play opportunities before Selkirk jumped out to a two goal advantage by the 14:14 mark. Sophomore Sam Siddall would get one back for UVic just over one minute later as he potted a power play marker for his first of the season. After the first, UVic 1 Selkirk 2.

Siddall’s goal would prove to spark a previously dormant UVic offence. Brent Sutherland buried a power play goal set up by Matt Bell at 5:42 before Bell would net one of his own at the 11:05 mark. Last year’s top rookie, Dennis Pavlina, notched his first of the year with four minutes to play in the second frame. After two, UVic 4 Selkirk 2.

UVic would never relinquish the lead as Matt Bell and Adam Klein would add the Club’s next two goals before the 15:00 mark of the final stanza. Selkirk would add a late strike on the power play but it was far too little on this night. Final score, UVic 6 Selkirk 3.

Matt Bell registered points in UVic’s first five goals of the game with 2 goals and 3 assists. Brent Sutherland and Tommy Adair also had productive nights with 3 points each. Bell, Sutherland and Adair were named the game’s first, second and third stars respectfully.

UVic went 2/9=22.2% on the power play, while Selkirk also went 2/9=22.2%. UVic outshot the Saints by a margin of 39-30.

UVic will head back to Victoria and prepare for their next games which are again on the road. November 4th will see the Trinity Western University Spartans host UVic before the team heads to Burnaby to face a powerhouse SFU Clan the following night.
