GM/Coach:
Harry Schamhart
Head coach Harry Schamhart’s roots grow deep in the hockey community. He started coaching at age 15 with Nelson Minor Hockey. He’s a 1985 UBC graduate, and the years he wasn’t behind the bench between then and now are few and far between. He’s been involved with minor hockey in Burnaby, Richmond, Point Grey and Juan de Fuca.
Schamhart has been with the UVIC Men’s Hockey Club since it’s inception in 2005. In that first season, the team went undefeated and won the provincials, the second season ended with the league title, and it was another provincial championship last season.
While he recognizes these successes, Schamhart is quick to note that he believes in education first and athletics second. He says UVIC a student led team, and he feels this is an excellent way for players to develop leadership skills.
There used to be a college hockey league in BC years ago, and Schamhart feels there’s a real need in BC for athletes to attend school and play hockey at a high level.
